Effect Monsters

We all know they have taken over the game, and that there is now a lack of normal monsters, but moreover, effect monsters are complex because there are different types that changes gameplay.

This guide will help you understand the differences with Effect Monster's Effect Type.

List of Types:
- Continuous
- Ignition
- Trigger
- Flip
- Quick Effect

Continuous Effect

Continuous effects come into play as soon as the monster hits the field, there are exceptions such as continuous effect monsters whose effects is only active in a certain phase/step.

- Continuous Effects do not start chains, so negation cards are useless

Example: Herald of Perfection that respond to the activation of effects that are useless vs Continuous Effects because Continuous Effects never "activate." Anything like Skill Drain or Veiler which does not specifically have to respond to the activation of an effect will still work.

Ignition Effect

Perhaps the most popular type of Effect Monster. These effects can only be used on Main Phase 1 & 2 of your own turn. Some monsters are an exception and activate in a different phase of your own turn.

Trigger Effect

A trigger effect is like it implies, it activates when a certain condition happens. There are two types of Trigger Effects, Compulsory and Optional.

Compulsory

Compulsory Trigger Effects activates whether you want it to or not. So if you don't like the results of the effect, avoid triggering the effect.

Optional

Optional Trigger Effects gives you the choice to use the effect or not after you trigger it. Since you have a choice, it's possible to miss the timing with Optional Trigger effects.

Flip Effect

Flip Effects activate when a monster is flipped faced up, whether it's manual, or by card effect.

- In the result they are attacked faced down and destroyed in battle, the effect activates and resolves in the damage step. They are not allowed to target themselves with their own effect in this case.

Quick Effect

This is the only Effect Type that has a spell spell of 2. It can respond/chain to things. Because they are Spell Speed 2, they can activate in your opponent's turn. This is the most flexible of all Effect Types.

There are also 2 Sub Type Quick Effects, Multi Trigger, and Quick Trigger.

Note: Ignition, trigger, and flip effects all have Spell Speed 1, which is the same as what Spell Cards have (other than quickplay spells). You cannot respond to a Spell Speed 1 effect with another Spell Speed 1 effect though, which is why only Quick Effects are able to chain or respond during the opponent's turn (since they are Spell Speed 2).

Multi Trigger

Multi Trigger Quick Effects are like trigger effects, they activate when a certain thing happens, but Multi Trigger Effects can be used more than once in the same chain.

Quick Trigger

Very similar to Multi Trigger, the only thing it is lacking is that it can't be used more than once in the same chain.

That is a Guide to all the different effect types!
Thank you for reading, and I hope this will be useful.

A couple corrections/clarifications:

I'm sure you meant it this way, but it's only cards like Herald of Perfection that respond to the activation of effects that are useless vs Continuous Effects because Continuous Effects never "activate." Anything like Skill Drain or Veiler which does not specifically have to respond to the activation of an effect will still work.

Is this just a summary or are you planning on elaborating more? Examples and such are always nice.

For FLIP There are 2 FLIP
one are FLIP summon, other just FLIP

Flip Summon: Usually you can find these against a netdecker burner using stealth bird who ragequitted angerly because you didn't take -1000 when you attack his stealth bird

FLIP : Well... snowman eater is not flip monster, but it has Flip effect. So you cann't use NOBLEMAN OF CROSSOUT for these monsters and removing other 2 in deck

You should state that Karakuri Komachi isn't a trigger effect, cuz every1 using that deck thinks it is.

Which part of it's effect? Because it does indeed have a trigger effect.

Wiki wrote:Continuous
This card must attack if able.

Trigger
When this face-up card on the field is selected as an attack target, change its battle position.

Continuous
While this card is face-up on the field, once per turn during your Main Phase, you can Normal Summon a "Karakuri" monster in addition to your Normal Summon or Set. (You can only gain this effect once per turn.)

I'm not sure what you're trying to say.

The first type you mention is called a Pseudo-Flip Effect. For those who do not know, "pseudo-" means fake or mock.

Wiki wrote:There is also a sub-effect Type, Pseudo-Flip Effects, which is essentially a Flip, without the printed word 'FLIP:', and with the effect treated as a Trigger Monster Effect.

Examples of monsters with such effects are "Tsukuyomi", "Dark Dust Spirit", "Nightmare Penguin", and "Fossil Dyna Pachycephalo".

Stealth Bird's direct damage effect is also a Trigger Monster effect.

This type is not affected by Nobleman of Crossout because they are not truly a Flip Effect Monster.

The second type you mentioned is the true Flip Effect Monster. They are instantly recognizable by the word "FLIP: " before the effect of the monster. This is the type of monster that is affected by Nobleman of Crossout.
