Laval Deck Discussion Thread!!
Hi,
Today I want to talk about a one of the newest Archetypes, ’’ Laval’’! These are a group of monsters with effects that all support each other. They heavily mill through their deck and to abuse their Synchro monsters they either return ‘’Laval’s’’ to the Deck or remove them from the game. They have several burn cards but after my experience I don’t think those are of great use in the Synchro variants but more in the beatdown/burn variants today I just want to talk about the Synchro based version.
‘’What makes them so great?’’ Is what you’re all probably thinking. Well they are not great because of the monsters that makes their setup quick, their Synchro monsters have incredible toolbox ability’s. In my opinion they are so good that you barely need other cards like Scrap Dragon. They have their Lavalval Dragon which is like Brionac, Dragon of the Ice Barrier, Laval the Greater can protect itself when it’d be destroyed by a card effect by removing a ‘’Laval’’ in the Grave, when Stannon is selected as a target of a card effect it can remove a ‘’Laval’’ to negate that card and destroy it, Lavalval Dragoon is your searcher which is really good here for cards like Laval Coatl and Burner. Finally there is Laval Twin Slayer which slays to defending lines with ease like the name says.
The ‘’Laval’s’’ are all are either Pyro or Warrior-type and they have a FIRE Attribute. Some of the monsters have 200 DEF which means they’re supported by the popular Archetype, ‘’Flamvell’’. These have been around for a while and we have all seen that they can mix for a lot of Synchro based decks, they mixed great with’’ Jurrac’s’’ as well and still do. Their most powerful card is Rekindling, who doesn’t know it? It lets you spam the field and in no time you bust out the most powerful Synchro’s in the game, including the ‘’Laval’’ ones, which are very powerful. I highly doubt ‘’Laval’’ would be able to be competitive in todays game without the support of ‘’Flamvell’’. Like I said ‘’Laval mills through their deck, and that really fast(in about 3 turns you can get 14 to 20 cards in the Graveyard).
Now you might be afraid to go deckout really fast, but no, you won’t. At a point you’ll have your setup and you’ll start the assault with big Synchro monsters.
Then there’s a third Archetype that walks right into this, Lightsworn, several monsters from this Archetype have standalone effects and a good mill capacity, this is really useful, the best monsters to run in ‘’Laval’s’’ from the Lightsworns are, Lyla, Ryko, Ehren. Others would need a ‘’Laval’’ + ‘’Lightsworn’’ variant only, then the ‘’Flamvell’’ aspect would have to be dropped which I don’t want.
Ryko takes the place of Laval Miller, it mills 3 cards and it destroys a card, that’s almost too good here! Lyla is there to work as Mystical Space Typhoon with ATK and DEF, I tested with her and it’s better then with Typhoon since it mills and also increases your monster count.
Ehren isn’t in the main but in the side deck, she has a really useful bounce ability but it’s not needed in the main since the deck itself is fast enough to get Lavalval and bounce a little more.
I can recommend about 75% monsters and the rest Spells and Traps.
For those who don’t want to do a little math you’d come down to 30 monsters and 10 spots left for Spells/Traps. I prefer 3 Royal Decree if you have so few spots, that leaves with 7 slots to fill. 3 of those will be taken by Rekindling, other slots by staple cards. Of course a Spell more and a monster less isn’t that bad if you want(I run 31 monsters and 6 Spells).
If you decide to run more Traps and less Spells I can recommend Flamvell Counter here, that is very good here.
Now like I said, you want to mill, and if you want that and have 30 monsters, 3 of those should obviously be Magical Merchant because it’s just a searcher in 2 ways here.
So Merchant gets our Rekindlings and more, now that’s done, we just need a few more cards to mill through our deck, this will be explained later.

Pro’s
- Really fast setup.
- Due to milling you easily get your other main cards.
- Fun to play.
- Consistent enough to have a really nice game with.
- The Archetype itself has many powerful Synchro’s which are better then the other Staple Synchro’s from time to time.
- Good OTK potential with a good chance of succeeding.
Con’s
- If your setup is ruined from the start you’re getting a really hard time.
- Sometimes a little too easy to stop.
- Not competitive against all Meta Decks although it does have a good chance against them.
All in all the ‘’Laval’s’’ are a really fun Archetype to play with and versatile enough in options. They have synergy and are consistent but not always the most competitive deck ever.

Laval Gunner
This is the best card to mill from the ‘’Laval’’ Archetype itself, with the small requirement to have a ‘’Laval’’ in the Grave when it’s Normal Summoned it can mill the top 5 cards of your Deck to the Graveyard, makes your setup ready really fast. Small risk of milling a Rekindling but the chance isn’t that big. Can become a decent beater when you mill 2/3 ‘’Laval’s’’ but that’s not why it’s good since you’ll use it for a Synchro afterwards mostly anyway. When this card is Normal Summoned while you have a "Laval" monster in your Graveyard other than "Laval Gunner", you can send the top 5 cards of your Deck to the Graveyard. This card gains 200 ATK for each "Laval" monster sent to the Graveyard by this effect.
Laval Lady of the Burning Lake
On first sight this card might not look that good but look again, it can destroy any set card your opponent controls, this means not just annoying Spells/Traps but even monsters. It’s at the cost of removing a ‘’Laval’’ and you need 3 or more different ones in the Graveyard but that’s not a problem, if you are smart you either remove a Tuner or a Synchro like Lavalval Dragon since they can be re-Summoned with Cannoneer and then it’s a good free +1. It even has 200 DEF and is Level 3 making it an excellent target for Rekindling. If there are 3 or more different "Laval" monsters in your Graveyard, you can remove from play 1 "Laval" monster from your Graveyard to select 1 Set card your opponent controls. Destroy that card.
Laval Coatl
That’s right, one line of text, and a good one. It’s the same effect as Laval Burner but the difference between the cards is that this is 3 levels lower and it’s a Tuner. Getting 3 different ‘’Laval’s’’ in the Grave isn’t a big deal since that’s what this deck does, it’s a quick Synchro for cards like Lavalval Dragoon and Brionac, if you combine this with Burner it’s an immediate Level 7 Synchro which is very good too for cards like, Black Rose Dragon, Ancient Flamvell Deity, Laval Stannon. All in all this card is very versatile and can give many possibility’s.If you have 3 or more different "Laval" monsters in your Graveyard, you can Special Summon this card from your hand.
Laval Burner
Like I said it’s the same effect as Coatl, difference is that this is the Cyber Dragon of the Archetype, 2100 ATK and can be searched with Dragoon for a little extra power, I can say that this card is always helpful for a big push. It’s also versatile for Synchro support being a Level 5 monster. If there are 3 or more "Laval" monsters with different names in your Graveyard, you can Special Summon this card from your hand.
Tender of the Laval Volcano
This is just another small miller, good combo card to recycle with Lavalval Dragon since she is back in the Grave in no-time. Good Level 1 200 DEF Tuner, so a Rekindling target which makes her mill even more. This is a backbone for the deck since she can just sent 2 more copies of herself to the Graveyard and then another ‘’Laval’’, for a total of 4 more ‘’Laval’s’’, yea that’s right it goes that easy. When this card is sent to the Graveyard while a "Laval" monster other than "Tender of the Laval Volcano" is in your Graveyard, you can send 1 "Laval" monster from your Deck to the Graveyard.
Laval Cannoneer
This is my personal favourite, you won’t use him each and every duel but it’s an immediate +1, needs smart play but can be great. It can Special Summon a removed ‘’Laval’’ Tuner so you can get a quick Synchro, it can Special Summon a removed ‘’Laval’’ Synchro monster so you have the Synchro and Cannoneer, the possibilities are endless. If you wonder how you will get ‘’Laval’s’’ removed, well it’s simple, opponent’s Bottomless, D.Prison or your own cards, Stannon, the Greater, Lady of the Burning Lake. If you think like: ‘’How will I play this guy in a smart way?’’ Then the answer is simple, it’s a great target to mill and once you think you’ll need it you can return it with Lavalval Dragon and add it with Dragoon or just don’t mill it and hope on drawing one or add with Dragoon. When this card is Normal or Flip Summoned, you can select 1 of your removed from play "Laval" monsters, and Special Summon it.
Flamvell Firedog
That this card is good is one thing we can all see, it doesn’t just target Flamvell Magician like many other decks, it serves it purposes here as a searcher for many monsters, Magician, Lady of the Burning Lake, Tender of the Laval Volcano. This allows for an easy Level 8, 7 or 5 monster and that what simply makes this card so good. When this card destroys an opponent's monster by battle and sends it to the Graveyard, you can Special Summon 1 FIRE monster with 200 or less DEF from your Deck, except "Flamvell Firedog".
Flamvell Magician
As you can see it’s not much of an effect, it’s mainly serving it’s purposes having 200 DEF and being a Level 4 Tuner, this just gives easy acces to the higher level Synchro monsters. While you control an "Ally of Justice" monster(s), this card gains 400 ATK.
Ryko, Lightsworn Hunter
Like many decks run this card because it fills the Grave this deck likes the card even more, it’s effective against many cards like Necrovalley, Shi-En and many more monsters that we see in todays Meta. And that’s not all, normally the mill would have a good chance of being a drawback but here it’s just another pro for the effect, making +’s has never been so easy.FLIP: You can destroy 1 card on the field. Send the top 3 cards of your deck to the graveyard.
Lyla, Lightsworn Sorceress
Good card to open a game with, monster version of Mystical Space Typhoon but it also mills 3 cards each End Phase so it’s a great card to open a game with. If you use her effect it also switches to defense which can protect you against big monsters which are Summoned super easy nowadays. You can change this card from face-up Attack Position to face-up Defense Position and destroy 1 Spell or Trap Card your opponent controls. If you activate this effect, this card's battle position cannot be changed until the end of your next turn, except with a card effect. During each of your End Phases, send the top 3 cards of your Deck to the Graveyard.
Magical Merchant
Popular card and a must have in every ‘’Laval’’ deck, mostly you’ll mill about 5 to 6 cards and then get a Spell/Trap. Searches your Decree/Rekindling or any other Spell/Trap just depends what’s first.FLIP: Pick up cards from the top of your Deck until you pick up a Spell Card or Trap Card. Add that card to your hand. Send the remaining cards to the Graveyard.
Effect Veiler
This is a very popular card nowadays and most decks run it, this is simply because of the increasing monster count in most decks and monster effects that become stronger, since this cards, people started either maining or siding it against many cards(this little card can stop an entire Fish FTK for example, giving you a turn).During your opponent's Main Phase, you can send this card from your hand to the Graveyard to select 1 face-up Effect Monster your opponent controls. Negate the effect(s) of that monster until the End Phase.
Sangan
Simple card needs a simple explanation, it’s just too awesome, it can search out Gunner, Coatl, Merchant which are it’s main targets in here. We all know why this card is good and Limited. When this card is sent from the field to the Graveyard, add 1 monster with 1500 or less ATK from your Deck to your hand.
Glow-Up Bulb
This card Is a mini miller but a great Tuner support, it’s easy to get a Level 4 monster out with this and with this card you have an immediate Synchro. You can send the top card of your Deck to the Graveyard and Special Summon this card from the Graveyard. Each player can only use the effect of "Glow-Up Bulb" once per Duel.
Unknown Synchron
This card is like Glow-Up Bulb, doesn’t mill a card but still good, can Special Summon itself from the Hand as long as you don’t have a monster and your opponent does, that’s not too hard to do considering cards like Stardust beating Merchant easily. This is mainly a good card in the early game since in a late game you mostly will have the control. If your opponent controls a monster and you control no monsters, you can Special Summon this card from your hand. Each player can only use the effect of "Unknown Synchron" once per Duel.
Ehren, Lightsworn Monk
Good card against those decks that stall like Burn, or return a constantly reviving card to the deck, also mill support for the deck and a decent 1600 ATK.If this card attacks a Defense Position monster, return that monster to its owner's Deck before damage calculation. During each of your End Phases, send the top 3 cards of your Deck to the Graveyard.
Koa’ki Meiru Bergzak
Easy to keep by revealing a Warrior like Gunner or Cannoneer, it can kill many monsters with it’s 2000 ATK and can attack in a row, very useful card when it comes down to decks like Quickdraw Dandywarrior which spam a lot of weak monsters.During each of your End Phases, destroy this card unless you send 1 "Iron Core of Koa'ki Meiru" from your hand to the Graveyard or reveal 1 Warrior-Type monster from your hand. If this card destroys an opponent's monster by battle, it can attack once again in a row.
Rekindling
This is ‘’the’’ Spell card of the deck, makes ready for any big push and the best thing is it’s unlimited, can be ran in 3’s and thus you increase the chance of pulling it at the proper moment. Once you play this at a smart moment you easily get 2 to 3 Synchro’s out and the game is either decided or almost decided.Special Summon from your Graveyard as many FIRE monsters as possible with 200 DEF. During the End Phase, remove from play all monsters that were Special Summoned by this effect.
Dark Hole
This is just a self-explanation, everyone knows why this is good and it’s because it simply gets you out of hard situations and gives an opportunity to strike back.Destroy all monsters on the field.
Giant Trunade
Another simple to understand card, not always you will have a Decree to back you up when you want to go for a big push, this is just another piece of the puzzle that’ll help you make a setup for a strong field.Return all Spell and Trap Cards on the field to their owners' hands.
Monster Reborn
Support card next to Rekindling, gets your monsters back in a simple way or can force your opponent into a Solemn Warning and after that you play the way more OP Rekindling.Special Summon 1 monster from either player's Graveyard to your side of the field.
Book of Moon
We all know why it’s limited, abusive card to be protected from cards that only affect face-up monsters, stop Synchro’s by flipping down the Tuner and many more options, use your imagination to disrupt your opponent’s strategy.Flip 1 face-up monster on the field into face-down Defense Position.
Prohibition
This card is to stop many cards, any card in the game but cards that play a big role in someone’s deck are the ones that are the best to declare. Example: Fish FTK, declare Super Ancient Deepsea King, Coelacanth to stop the opponent from doing practically anything. When you activate this card, declare 1 card name. Cards with that name and their effects cannot be used. Cards on the field before this card was activated are not affected (including face-down cards).
Royal Decree
Excellent card to bluff with, might hold your opponent back if you need it. When you want to make a push and use this as a backup so the opponent won’t play cards like Judgment or Warning, be sure to play it before you do anything, it’s not able to chain to a Counter Trap!Negate the effects of all other Trap Cards on the field.
Debunk
Negates powerful monsters and that’s what makes it really worth siding, it negates cards that are ran a lot these days like: Dandylion, Doppelwarrior, Effect Veiler, Sangan, Glow-Up Bulb and many, many more! No cost at all so it’s just a really disruptive card.Negate the activation of the effect of an Effect Monster that activates in the hand or Graveyard, and remove it from play.
Laval Stannon
Now this is the most powerful monster ‘’Laval’’ has in terms of ATK, but it’s effect is also really good against a bunch of cards like: Brionac, D.Prison, Compulsory, Book of Moon and many more cards.1 Tuner + 1 or more non-Tuner FIRE monsters
When this card is Synchro Summoned, send 1 card from your hand to the Graveyard. When this card is targeted by a card effect, you can remove from play 1 "Laval" monster from your Graveyard to negate the activation of that card effect, and destroy that card.
It’s just super easy to get but really useful, I tend to use it about 1 or 2 copies per duel.
Laval Twin Slayer
Now this might just look like a easy to get out monster with a nice ATK stats and a good pierce with more then 1 attack. But look again, it has only 200 DEF, it’s a really strong target for Rekindling when you’ve already used this card. Also it’s good against Tokens to do the full 4800 damage, defending monster + a strong offensive monster and more options. It is a very useful card to start breaking through defences and a good backup card when you want to make a push but it won’t last too long on it’s own.1 Tuner + 1 or more non-Tuner FIRE monsters
This card gains effects based on the number of "Laval" monsters in your Graveyard. ● 2+: Once per turn, if this card destroys a Defense Position monster by battle, it can attack once again in a row. ● 3+: During battle between this attacking card and a Defense Position monster whose DEF is lower than the ATK of this card, inflict the difference as Battle Damage to your opponent.
Laval the Greater
Decent enough 2400 beater like Twin Slayer but this card has an incredibly good effect, it can prevent it’s destruction by a card effect by simply removing a ‘’Laval’’ in the Graveyard. This is great against stuff like Mirror Force, Dark Hole, Treacherous Trap Hole, Black Rose Dragon and many other cards that destroy multiple cards on the field. This card is deadly together with Stannon out of the field since your opponent won’t be able to do a mass destruction nor target Stannon which is the most powerfull of the two.1 Tuner + 1 or more non-Tuner FIRE Monsters
When this card is Synchro Summoned, select and send 1 card from your hand to the Graveyard. If this card would be destroyed by a card effect, you can remove from play 1 "Laval" monster from your Graveyard instead.
Lavalval Dragon
The Brionac of the Archetype without having a big cost, just needs to empty your Grave setup, but when you’re in a late game with most of your deck milled you’re happy to have this guy. Also when you play a ‘’Rekindling combo’’ this can be ‘’the’’ card to make sure you’re victorious. The returning can hurt some cards though but if you’re smart you return the cards like, Gunner, Tender, Coatl and Burner, also you can return Synchro ‘’Laval’s’’ so you can re-use them.1 Tuner + 1 or more non-Tuner FIRE monsters.
You can return 2 "Laval" monsters from your Graveyard to your Deck to select 1 card your opponent controls. Return that card to the hand.
Lavalval Dragoon
This guy does 2 things, get your Grave ready and searches, if you want to make a push this is a good card to search out good cards like Coatl or Burner. Problem with this card Is that if you don’t hold a ‘’Laval’’ already, you’ll have to discard the added card, which is good in combo with Tender to thin your deck and get a Grave setup. But otherwise this isn’t the best choice to use unless you hold a ‘’Laval’’.1 Tuner + 1 or more non-Tuner FIRE monsters
Once per turn, during your Main Phase, you can add 1 "Laval" monster from your Deck to your hand. Then, send 1 "Laval" monster from your hand to the Graveyard.
Ancient Flamvell Deity
You won’t summon this card too often but in needed situations you’ll be able to get it out. Can remove important cards from the setup of the opponent and make itself a little stronger. Like a D.D. Crow which is stronger here.1 FIRE Tuner + 1 or more non-Tuner Pyro-Type monsters
When this card is Synchro Summoned, remove from play cards from your opponent's Graveyard, up to the number of cards in their hand. This card gains 200 ATK for each card removed from play by this effect.
Brionac, Dragon of the Ice Barrier
The popular version of Lavalval Dragon, it’s just really versatile to get your control back on but personally I rather use Lavalval Dragon in here during a duel since it’s simply better.1 Tuner + 1 or more non-Tuner monsters
You can discard any number of cards to the Graveyard, to return the same number of cards from the field to the hand.
Black Rose Dragon
Explaining itself in the text, kills everything, can help a lot during a late game, especially if you’re holding Rekindling. But the card on it’s own can just give you an extra turn that you might need.1 Tuner + 1 or more non-Tuner monsters
When this card is Synchro Summoned, you can destroy all cards on the field. Once per turn, you can remove from play 1 Plant-Type monster from your Graveyard to change 1 Defense Position monster your opponent controls to face-up Attack Position, and reduce its ATK to 0 until the End Phase.
Mist Wurm
Another additional return card, like Lavalval Dragon but then without ANY cost. Just very good to disrupt the opponent and/or get some control back.1 Tuner + 2 or more non-Tuner monsters
When this card is Synchro Summoned, return up to 3 cards your opponent controls to the hand.
Stardust Dragon
If you don’t want to run into anything stupid while attacking here’s your friend, Mirror Force, Bottomless, Torrential, Dark Hole, Smashing Ground, Lightning Vortex, Hammer Shot, Fissure are all dead. Also some speed 2 monster effects like Rai-Oh, Doomcallibur Knight.1 Tuner + 1 or more non-Tuner monsters
You can Tribute this card to negate the activation of a Spell Card, Trap Card, or Effect Monster's effect that destroys a card(s) on the field, and destroy that card. If you negate an effect this way, you can Special Summon this card from your Graveyard during the End Phase.
Scrap Dragon
Easy 1 for 1 effect, fun with Tender since you’ll just mill afterwards, really consistent card and can do just as much damage as Black Rose but without killing yourself entirely.1 Tuner + 1 or more non-Tuner monsters
Once per turn, you can select 1 card you control and 1 card your opponent controls. Destroy them. When this card is destroyed by your opponent's card (either by battle or by card effect) and sent to the Graveyard, select 1 non-Synchro "Scrap" monster in your Graveyard and Special Summon it.
T.G. Hyper Librarian
Here is the card that can make turns last 15 minutes, Librarian, this card can simply speed the whole deck up a lot and that’s why it’s good, no real thought needed.1 Tuner + 1 or more non-Tuner monsters
While this card is face-up on the field, each time a Synchro Monster(s) is Synchro Summoned, draw 1 card for each.
Trishula, Dragon of the ice Barrier
The card all players fear, Trishula, it just gets the number of requirements you need to summon it back for you by removing 3 cards. Can be devastating in the start of a game since it can destroy some entire setups.1 Tuner + 2 or more non-Tuner monsters
When this card is Synchro Summoned, you can activate this effect to remove from play up to one card each from your opponent's hand, field and Graveyard. (The card in the hand is chosen at random.)
Ally of Justice – Catastor
The card which can destroy anything that’s not DARK, very useful card against a lot of cards, even Samurai can’t stand up to this too easy with their Shi-En.1 Tuner + 1 or more non-Tuner monsters
If this card attacks or is attacked by a non-DARK monster, destroy that monster at the start of the Damage Step (without damage calculation).
Black Winged Dragon
Mainly in the Side Deck against those burn decks, very useful against them since it negates any card they have, after that you can simply weaken their monsters a lot.1 Tuner + 1 or more non-Tuner monsters
Whenever you would take damage from a card effect, place 1 Black Feather Counter on this card instead. This card loses 700 ATK for each Black Feather Counter on it. Once per turn, you can remove all Black Feather Counters on this card to have 1 face-up monster your opponent controls lose 700 ATK for each Black Feather Counter, and inflict damage to your opponent equal to the ATK lost by that monster because of this effect.
Colossal Fighter
This card is simply either a big beatstick or a wall to sit behind, second thing is what you’ll use him for the most if you’d really need it against an and OTK for example.1 Tuner + 1 or more non-Tuner monsters
This card gains 100 ATK for every Warrior-Type monster in any Graveyard. When this card is destroyed by battle and sent to the Graveyard, you can Special Summon 1 Warrior-Type monster from either player's Graveyard.

I made a Fire/Pyro theme deck. Only used it once so I haven't tweaked it enough yet, but it uses a few Laval cards. I was looking through them and saw they had potential with some research on what to use them with.
Also good job, sir P_^ (it's supposed to be a face with a monocle)

Re: Laval Deck Discussion Thread!!
Did you try a little more balance in the deck? I run a little over 20 monsters to keep the ratio balanced and the eventual comeback options at hand, even when my grave is disrupted.

Re: Laval Deck Discussion Thread!!
Just how consistent is this deck? I tried a normal Laval build originally, and it was pretty bad. Now, I focus on Lavalsworns - Lavals get their best effects by milling, and it also sets up the Graveyard for Rekindling.
You're also limiting yourself drastically by running Decree, since you can't run Blazing Dust Explosion, which is an amazing Laval card. Lavals have a lot of S/T hate as it is through Lava Lady abuse.
Most of the Lavals you run are unnecessary, since they can't be used with Rekindling and are generally not that useful for the deck. Card Trooper, IMO, is better than Laval Gunner, since it can mill repeatedly and also gives you a draw when it dies.
Laval Coatl is pretty awful vs. Laval Forest Sprite. Sprite can be Rekindled, and is a Firedog target into an instant Dragoon. And not maxing out Lava Ladies is very strange to me.
It's a good try, but I think it needs work.

Laval is ridiculous in getting out Shooting Quasar. Fire Quasar is much explosive than Water Quasar since you only need Rekindling, Boost Warrior and good Grave Setup (2 Laval Magma Artillery, 3 Tender of Laval Volcano).
