I. The Introduction
- Spoiler:
Phantom Beasts. Have you heard of them? Maybe. Have you ever used them? There's a small chance. Have you ever won with them? I'm gonna guess no. These monsters are small in numbers but massive in size. This deck has the capability to have many monsters on the field that has over 3000 ATK. It has draw power. It has minut amounts of burn. The deck really has a lot of things that you need to make a strong deck.
The deck is a very old set. Some of the most old monsters are members. Remember all those times that Yugi summoned Gazelle King the King of Mythical Beasts? Or maybe you just remember Chimera the Flying Mythical Beast? Either way they are both members of this deck.
Now I am sure you are wondering "How are those Phantom Beasts?". Well the answer to that is simple. It is one of many mistranslations that have appeared with time. Gazelle was originally the king of Phantom Beasts in the OCG. The same story is true with Chimera but the geniuses at Konami fixed the problem by adding the effect it has that makes it always a Phantom Beast.
Quite a while later Konami had an even more brilliant idea to release more of these monsters. They released a total of 4 other monsters plus a trap card for support. That brings the total number of cards in the archetype to 7 which is very small. That might make it surprising how well this deck can do in a non-competitive environnent.
II. The Archetype
- Spoiler:
- 1. The MonstersGazelle the King of Mythical Beasts
Level 4 / EARTH / Beast / 1500 ATK / 1200 DEF
This monster moves so fast that it looks like an illusion to mortal eyes.
One of the first Phantom Beast monsters released ever. However, time has passed over him, semi-competitive Beast-Warrior variants won't use him. The only way to use him is a Pure Phantom Beast deck which focuses on Summoning the Chimera. Only one advantage can be said about this card: Horn of the Phantom Beast and Phantom Beast Cross-Wing target too.
Run 0. Use 2-3 copies in dedicated Chimera Deck.Chimera the Flying Mythical Beast
Level 6 / WIND / Beast / 2100 ATK / 1800 DEF
"Gazelle the King of Mythical Beasts" + "Berfomet"
(This monster is always treated as a "Phantom Beast" monster.) When this card is destroyed, you can select and Special Summon either "Berfomet" or "Gazelle the King of Mythical Beasts" from your Graveyard.
Every Deck has its own boss monster. But it's not the king of this archetype. The only advantage of this card is that it's also a target for Cross-Wing and Horn, and its self-replacing can surprise your opponent, but not so useable if you ask me.
Run 0. Use 1-2 copies in Chimera variant.Phantom Beast Wild-Horn
Level 4 / EARTH / Beast-Warrior / 1700 ATK / 0 DEF
During battle between this attacking card and a Defense Position monster whose DEF is lower than the ATK of this card, inflict the difference as Battle Damage to your opponent.
This card is decent. It has good stats (except its 0 DEF which can be bad in rare situations) and can be one of the biggest Level 4 beatsticks in the game - with Piercing Damage.
Run 3. Always, no matter what variant you use.Phantom Beast Cross-Wing
Level 4 / LIGHT / Beast-Warrior / 1300 ATK / 1300 DEF
While this card is in the Graveyard, "Gazelle the King of Mythical Beasts" and all "Phantom Beast" monsters on the field gain 300 ATK.
Another really good support card for the archetype, which is really unique. There is no other archetype which has similar Graveyard-related support card like this. Can be Tributed for Rock-Lizard, Foolish Burial target, compatibility with LS, etc.
Run 2-3. I prefer running 3, but you can also try to run 2 if you have so much dead draws with it.Phantom Beast Thunder-Pegasus
Level 4 / LIGHT / Beast-Warrior / 700 ATK / 2000 DEF
When your opponent's monster declares an attack, you can remove from play this card from your Graveyard to make the Battle Damage taken by 1 "Gazelle the King of Mythical Beasts" or "Phantom Beast" monster 0. When this happens, that monster is not destroyed by battle.
The archetype's own Necro Gardna, but of course, it's worse because you need a face-up Phantom Beast for its effect. Also get boost from Cross-Wing, so you can increase its DEF with it, but not so good with Horn because of its low ATK. However, you can stall with it in variants where you want to Tribute Summon the Rock-Lizard.
Run 0-2.Phantom Beast Rock-Lizard
Level 7 / DARK / Beast-Warrior / 2200 ATK / 2000 DEF
If you are Tributing a "Phantom Beast" monster or "Gazelle the King of Mythical Beasts", this card can be Normal Summoned with 1 Tribute. When this card destroys a monster by battle, inflict 500 damage to your opponent. When this card is destroyed and sent to the Graveyard by your opponent's card effect, inflict 2000 damage to your opponent.
Another really good support card for the archetype, and this card is really unique and has a really good anti-meta element which makes it really useable in a variant concentrating on him and another, but more famous Beast-Warrior: Beast King Barbaros. Why am I saying this? Because of its last effect. Staples like Solemn Warning, Solemn Judgment, Mirror Force, Torrential Tribute, Dark Hole etc. can stops a lots of Deck, but for this card, it's just good if it's destroyed, since it's a free 2000 damage. Good combo with Call of the Haunted too to recycle. The only thing you need to worry if it's destroyed by battle - but with Cross-Wing and Horn on your side, it won't happen so easy.
Run 0-2. If you use the mentioned Skill Drain variant, use 2 definitely. I feel 3 a bit inconsistent.2. The Spells
Unfortunately, there are no cards could be added to this section. So skip this part.3. The TrapsHorn of the Phantom Beast
Normal Trap Card
Equip this card to a Beast-Type or Beast-Warrior-Type monster you control. It gains 800 ATK. When the equipped monster destroys an opponent's monster by battle and sends it to the Graveyard, draw 1 card.
This card is really popular nowadays, and one of the main reason to make Beast or Beast-Warrior oriented Decks. Even if the card is existing since Duelist Revolution, T.G. Stun variants made it so popular in today's meta. But why should the Phantom Beasts be an exception in using this card if it's carrying this archetype's name?
Run 3, especially because it's easily destroyed now (Sept 2011).
III. The Supports
- Spoiler:
- 1. MonstersReborn Tengu
Level 4 / WIND / Beast-Warrior / 1700 ATK / 600 DEF
When this card is removed from the field, Special Summon 1 "Reborn Tengu" from your Deck.
Reborn Tengu is just a really splashable card in today's meta, and there is a reason for it. It can really often (almost always) bring another copy of it from the Deck, really splashable, and a decent beatstick - but in this Deck, it's an awesome beater, also fits the theme, and can help you to access Exceeds so easily. Then why should be this Deck an exception of missing this awesome card from it?
Run 3.Summoner Monk
Level 4 / DARK / Spellcaster / 800 ATK / 1600 DEF
This card cannot be Tributed. When this card is Normal or Flip Summoned, it is changed to Defense Position. Once per turn, you can discard 1 Spell Card to Special Summon 1 Level 4 monster from your Deck. It cannot attack this turn.
There is some reasons why this card is a really good support. First, it's now at 2, so it's more easy to make it a support in your Deck. Second, Exceeds. With Phantom Beast, whiches are all Level 4 monsters. The only problem can be the method how you activate its effect: usually, this Deck doesn't use so much spells, but if you use one of the variant which uses at least 12 Spell Cards, be sure to add 2 copies of this card.
Run 0-2. Even 1 can be a good tech in your Deck. Make sure you use enough Spells if you add this card to your Deck.Berfoment
Level 5 / DARK / Fiend / 1400 ATK / 1800 DEF
When this card is Normal or Flip Summoned, you can add 1 "Gazelle the King of Mythical Beasts" from your Deck to your hand.
This card is one of the worst cards in this archetype, especially that it's not a Phantom Beast after all. It's also Level 5, so it's hard to Summon (or just not worth it), and only get your Gazelle if you Normal or Flip Summoned it, so Special Summon spam also unable.
Run 0. Use 1-3 copies in Chimera variant (I suggest 2).Manticore of Darkness
Level 6 / FIRE / Beast-Warrior / 2300 ATK / 1000 DEF
During the End Phase of any turn this card is sent to the Graveyard, you can send 1 Beast, Beast-Warrior or Winged Beast-Type Monster Card from your hand or your side of the field to the Graveyard to Special Summon this card from the Graveyard.
Ok. This card is REALLY underrated. But this card is SO AWESOME, one of the reasons why you should make a Phantom Beast, or a Beast-Warrior Deck. It's effect is like Dandylion's, so it doesnt't matter where did it went from to the Graveyard. Cannot miss the timing, because it uses its effect in the End Phase, and so much variety to choose from its effect. In PhantomSworn variant, you can also discard useless Wulfs for it, or dead hand Phantom Beasts (like Cross-Wing or Thunder-Pegasus), and so on.
Run 1-2. PhantomSworn variants can also try out 3 copies. My suggestion is using 2.Pitch-Black Warwolf
Level 4 / DARK / Beast-Warrior / 1600 ATK / 600 DEF
Your opponent cannot activate Trap Cards during the Battle Phase.
This card can be suprisingly useable against Decks with heavy backrow. Cards like Dimensional Prison, Mirror Force are useless, but your opponent cannot even activate anything they wanted to do in their Battle Phase, like a surprise Skill Drain, Call of the Haunted... or Horn of the Phantom Beast. It can be also used as a DARK fodder for Chaos cards.
Run 0-2.Enraged Battle Ox
Level 4 / EARTH / Beast-Warrior / 1700 ATK / 1000 DEF
As long as this card remains face-up on your side of the field, when Beast, Beast-Warrior and Winged Beast-Type monsters on your side of the field attack with an ATK that is higher than the DEF of your opponent's Defense Position monster, inflict the difference as Battle Damage to your opponent's Life Points.
This card is a counterpart of our Phantom Beast Wild-Horn with the exception that it gives Piercing Damage to everybody in the Deck. However, it doesn't compatible with Cross-Wing, but it is with Horn. If you can find any space for him, I suggest to at least try him out since he's good enough to be included.
Run 0-2. Solid Phantom variants love this card, so there, you can also try out 3 copies of it.Effect Veiler
Level 1 / LIGHT / Spellcaster / 0 ATK / 0 DEF
During your opponent's Main Phase, you can send this card from your hand to the Graveyard to select 1 face-up Effect Monster your opponent controls. Negate the effect(s) of that monster until the End Phase.
This card is just too awesome to miss it out from this Deck. Not a direct support, but a must in any Deck nowadays. Can stop annoying bosses and OTKs.
Run 1-3.Ryko, Lightsworn Hunter
Level 2 / LIGHT / Beat / 200 ATK / 100 DEF
FLIP: You can destroy 1 card on the field. Send the top 3 cards of your deck to the graveyard.
The good ol' Ryko. Cannot be missed from a Deck which uses its Graveyard, so be sure to add it to your Deck if you can, since it can be really useable.
Run 0-3, since this one is really a preference, because Solid Phantoms cannot run it, while PhantomSworns runs 3 copy.Shiba-Warrior Taro
Level 2 / EARTH / Beast-Warrior / 800 ATK / 600 DEF
This card cannot be destroyed by battle. When a card on the field is destroyed by battle or by a card effect, return this face-up card to its owner's hand.
A semi-stall card, but the reason you use it that it's a tuner. The only useable Beast-Warrior tuner, and an instant access to Sirius the Blue Wolf Star.
Run 0 or 2-3.Sirius the Blue Wolf Star
Level 6 / DARK / Beast-Warrior / 2400 ATK / 1500 DEF
1 Tuner + 1 or more non-Tuner monsters
When this card is destroyed and sent from the field to the Graveyard, you can select 1 face-up monster your opponent controls. That monster loses 2400 ATK.
A really good generic Synchro, which just fits with the archetype. And it's easier to Summon than you think with Shiba-Warrior Taro. This card can be your prime in Solid Phantom build. Use it if you can (and in DN, you can).
Use 0-2. In Solid Phantom build, use at least 1 and you can use up to 3 copies if you use Taro.2. The SpellsSolidarity
Continuous Spell Card
If you have only 1 original (printed) Type of monster in your Graveyard, face-up monsters you control with the same Type gain 800 ATK.
This card is good enough to build a Solid Phantom deck around it, since most of the monsters are really big enough to be beatsticks - but that 800 ATK can give you a really huge advantage most of the time, especially with the other supports, and makes your monsters almost undestroyable by battle - which is really preferable, for example, by Rock-Lizard. Of course, it has also disadvantages: you cannot use other type of mosnters, not even for Synchro or Exceed Summon.
Run 0 or 3. Of course, run 3 in Solid Phantom.Wild Nature's Release
Normal Spell Card
Increase the ATK of 1 face-up Beast-Type or Beast-Warrior-Type monster on the field by an amount equal to its DEF. Destroy the monster during the End Phase of the turn that this card is activated.
This card is really useable, since sometimes it can give you the missing ATK for an OTK, or for a finisher move. Almost compatible with most of the Beast-Warriors you have, except Wild-Horn. But in most cases, it's a +1000 ATK, which is really high, and usually the sent card also gives you an advantage, or can be recycled. Also an interesting tech with Thunder-Pegasus
Run 0-3. Personal preference again.Foolish Burial
Normal Spell Card
Send 1 Monster Card from your Deck to the Graveyard.
This card is a must in this Deck. No matter which variant do you use.
Run 1. Always. (Or as many you can.)Pot of Duality
Normal Spell Card
Reveal the top 3 cards of your Deck, add 1 of them to your hand, then shuffle the rest back into your Deck. You can only activate 1 "Pot of Duality" per turn. You cannot Special Summon a monster(s) during the turn you activate this card.
This card is just really awesome, especially here, like in Gravekeeper's. This Deck's huge disadvantage is the usual lack of Special Summons (there are exceptions, of course, but most of the monsters are Summoned by Normal Summon), so you can use it without be worried.
Run 2-3.3. The TrapsCall of the Haunted
Continuous Trap Cards
Select 1 monster from your Graveyard and Special Summon it in face-up Attack Position. When this card is removed from the field, destroy the monster. When the monster is destroyed, destroy this card.
One of the Traps whiches are a must in this Deck, even if it's destroyed by the MST.
Run 0 OR 2.
IV. The Techs
- Spoiler:
1. The MonstersAkz, the Pumer
Level 6 / EARTH / Beast-Warrior / 1500 ATK / 1000 DEF
This card cannot be Normal Summoned or Set. This card can only be Special Summoned by removing from play 2 Beast-Warrior-Type monsters in your Graveyard. Once per turn, you can discard 1 Beast-Warrior-Type monster from your hand to activate 1 of the following effects: ● Double this card's ATK until the End Phase. ● This card can attack your opponent directly this turn.
Can be a really interesting tech, especially in Solid Phantom deck for endgame, because of its direct attacking or doubling can be dangerous if it's equipped with a Horn and there's also a Solidarity, then you play a Wild Nature's Release.
Run 0-1. It has a really huge cost to Summon and using its effect.Chiron the Mage
Level 4 / EARTH / Beast-Warrior / 1800 ATK / 1000 DEF
Once per turn, you can discard 1 Spell Card from your hand to destroy 1 Spell or Trap Card your opponent controls.
Also can be a good tech in 2 cases: in a variant which uses 2 Summoner Monks with a lots of Spells, or in Solid Phantoms. Also has a huge ATK and Horn target.
Run 0-1.Exarion Universe
Level 4 / DARK / Beast-Warrior / 1800 ATK / 1900 DEF
Activate this effect only during your Battle Step. This card loses 400 ATK and during battle between this attacking card and a Defense Position monster whose DEF is lower than the ATK of this card, inflict the difference as Battle Damage to your opponent. This effect continues until the End Phase of this turn.
This card is a really huge beatstick, especially with Wild Nature's Release. Also can be do huge Piercing Damage, but unfortunately its effect is mandatory, but there are times you wouldn't want to activate it. It's DARK, it can be used, but nothing special.
Run 0-1.Ghost Knight of Jackal
Level 5 / EARTH / Beast-Warrior / 1700 ATK / 1600 DEF
You can Special Summon an opponent's monster that is destroyed and sent to the Graveyard by this card as a result of battle to your side of the field in face-up Defense Position.
This card, not like the others, can be a really interesting tech in your Deck and can really surprise your opponent. And you don't need to afraid because of low ATK anymore. Oh, and it doesn't give back the monster when it's destroyed like other cards. The only problem can be it's level, but sometimes it's worth it.
Run 0-2.Rhinotaurus
Level 4 / FIRE / Beast-Warrior / 1800 ATK / 600 DEF
If 2 or more of your opponent's monsters are destroyed by battle with your monsters during the same Battle Phase, this card can attack twice during that Battle Phase.
This card is also a good tech, especially with cards like Ojama Trio or Nimble Musasabi - then you can use this card to inflict huge damage.
Run 0-1.Genex Ally Birdman
Level 3 / DARK / Machine / ATK 1400 / DEF 400
You can return 1 face-up monster you control to the hand to Special Summon this card from your hand, and this card gains 500 ATK if it was a WIND monster you returned. If this card is Special Summoned with this effect, remove it from play when it is removed from the field.
This card can be your other tuner in your Deck. A really good and splashable card, gives you a free Special Summon, and a good combo with Tengu.
Run 0-3. If you use it, I suggest to use 2 copies.Gallis the Star Beast
Level 3 / EARTH / Beast-Type / 800 ATK / 800 DEF
You can reveal this card in your hand to send the top card of your Deck to the Graveyard. If that card is a monster, inflict damage to your opponent equal to its Level x 200, and Special Summon this card from your hand. If it is not a monster, destroy this card.
This card can give you a huge advantage along with Ryko. Suggested in PhantomSworn or in variants with huge amount of monsters.
Run 0 or 2-3.Morphing Jar
Level 2 / EARTH / Rock-Type / 700 ATK / 600 DEF
FLIP: Both players discard their hands, then draw 5 cards.
I wanted to mention this card, even if DWs are Tier Decks now, since this can refresh your hand, and/or discard useless cards in your hand. Most useable in variants which don't mill (enough).
Run 0-1.2. The SpellsFires of Doomsday
Quick-Play Spell Card
If you activate this card, you cannot Summon other monsters this turn. Special Summon 2 "Doomsday Tokens" (Fiend-Type/DARK/Level 1/ATK 0/DEF 0) in Defense Position. These tokens cannot be Tributed for a Tribute Summon, unless it is for a DARK monster.
This card is really interesting, since there are only a few DARK monsters in the Deck. But when you don't have any monsters and you want to stall, you can use it. Or better: you can Tribute these monsters for the Tribute Summon of Rock-Lizard.
Run 0-1.Pot of Avarice
Normal Spell Card
Select 5 Monster Cards in your Graveyard. Return those cards to the Deck, then draw 2 cards.
If you feel that you mill enough and want to recycle some useable cards (like Tengus): use this card.
Run 0-1.Mind Control
Normal Spell Card
Take control of 1 monster on your opponent's side of the field until the End Phase. This monster cannot declare an attack or be Tributed.
This card is usually underestimated, but it has its own power. Feel free to use it for Exceed/Synchro Summoning, especially in non-Solid variants.
Run 0-1.3. The TrapsBeast Rising
Continuous Trap Card
Once per turn, you can remove from play 1 face-up Beast-Type or Beast-Warrior-Type monster you control to select 1 other face-up Beast-Type or Beast-Warrior-Type monster you control. The selected monster gains the original ATK of the monster removed from play for this effect.
To be honest, this card is nothing special. I wanted to mention it for someone interested in Skill Drain variant, since there Imperial Custom can protect this card, and Beast King Barbaros can give a huge ATK for the selected monster. But as I said - nothing special.
Run 0-1. I say to run 0, but in "Beasts of Barbaros", you can tech this card if you want.
V. The Variants
- Spoiler:
Under construction
1. Chimera
2. Solid Phantoms
3. PhantomSworn
4. Beasts of Barbaros
5. Phantomoja
6. Myth Hamsters
VI. The End
- Spoiler:
I hope you enjoyed this strange, unexpected Guide about this unsupported, but really old and colorful archetype: the Phantom Beasts and its supports, the Beast-Warriors. Comments are appreciated, because this is my first guide I've ever written.
See you later!
Thank you Welche for writing the original Intro.

Thank you. Still unfinished, unfortunately, I'll do the Variants too as soon as possible. I'm going to write a sentence or two about them, how to play with them, and their special support cards.
