negating the effect of a monster
There's a trap card (I can't recall the exact name now) that negates the activation of a spell, trap or effect monster card and destroys it. Does that apply to monsters that are Special Summoned (from the hand, deck or graveyard) by their own effect (for example "Wulf, Lightsworn Beast")?

Wulf would be affected, since it is a trigger effect that activates.
Cards like Cyber Dragon would not be effected because it's an inherent summon condition that does not activate.

Yes, Special Summon is still a Summon. However, as Miror said, monsters with Summoning Conditions like Cyber Dragon can't be negated.

If you're not sure if a monster's effect activates when it Special Summons itself, the card text will give it away, for example Gorz:
-When- you take battle damage, etc etc, -then- you can SS this card from your hand.
Usually, when (X happens), [you can] Special Summon this card from your _____
Means it activated.
