Xyz's as Synchro materials?

Me and my friends were discussing if Xyz's can be used as Synchro materials, i was completely unsure but my friend said that the stars on the Xyz monster isn't a lvl instead it is a rank. Any help will be appreciated.

No. Synchros require monsters with levels as material. Xyz do not have levels. Therefore, they cannot be used.

Okay, i would take it that they are also unaffected by cards that involve lvl's like Gravity Bind?

No. You cannot use Harmonic Waves on them either.

I can't see that working on Xyz's if they don't even have lvl's.

Yeah, Xyz monsters have ranks and not levels. They are a great answer to decks that run stall cards like gravity bind and level limit.

As of now, Xyz monsters can't have levels in any way.
OCG ruling supports you can't target Xyz monster with Harmonic Waves
