[Deck Review] Fairy Tale Horrors
Fabled Archetype review
The "Fabled" archetype was originally released in OCG via duel terminals before being released in TCG in Hidden Arsenal 2, 3, and 4. Fableds are a series of light fiend type monsters that whose effects revolve around discarding. "The Fableds" are light beast type monsters that act as support for the main Fabled core monsters. Unlike dark world monsters fabled effects activate when discarded for costs and cannot miss the timing.
Playstyle
Fables typically play an extremely aggressive game that focuses on rapid synchro summoning and advantage gaining. Typically Fabled decks run more than 20 monsters and and plenty of discard effects to synchro quickly, thought there is one variant, Unicore control, that takes a slowing and more cautious approach to the game.
Fableds
Note: many of the fabled monsters were released in the hidden arsenal series, and all of us know that those sets are often filled with some of the most $#*%ty cards in existance. The Fableds listed below are the ones that actually serve a purpose.
ROTA on speed. While the activation condition may be troublesome if you have no Fableds on the field this usually should not be a problem. The fact that it is a monster helps fuel pot of avarice plays. Also "The Fabled" monsters are also considered "Fabled" monsters.
Run 3
Reborn for the archetype. Turns discards into free special summons from the graveyard. Also note that Fableds have 2 level 4 synchros which can be revived by her effect. Running 3 is not unheard of, but can result in dead draws.
Run 2-3
Back in the day when The Fableds were not released this was the deck's main tuner. Nowadays its used more often as a backup discard outlet that can be revived by krus.
Run 0-1
This card almost singlehandedly revived interest in the dark work archetype when it was released. The discard was considered an effect and provided both a discard outlet and a tuner for dark world decks. Currently only used in dark world synchro decks.
Run 2-3 (dark world synchro)
Run as a potential way into formula synchron. No other real uses. Usually the plant engine does this better though.
Run 0-2
The Fableds
Tuner and discard outlet rolled up in one. Level 1 provides accessed to formula synchron and special summon ability is nice as well.
Run 3
The heart of the deck. Level 2 tuner that specials summons itself when discarded. Turns discards into +0s or potentially positive advantage.
Run 3
The Fableds lacked a suitablely easily summoned non-tuner for synchro summons until this showed up. Helps with discard costs and when its attack boost is activated makes a good beater. Drawback is that its removed from play when removed from the fields if summoned by its effect, making it a one time deal and unable to help pot of avarice.
Run 2-3
Mostly used as sidedeck material. Effect quite useful against first turn Shi ens and Glads that aren't backed by war chariots.
Essentially a nontuner chawa. A discard outlet that special summons itself and can bring a low level fabled monster to tag along with it. Usually not used except in Unicore builds.
Notable Support
Cards you should already know:
Morphing Jar
Pot of Avarice
Discard outlet that with a destruction effect that can't be stopped by stardust. Turns fabled effects into +1s at best and +0s at worst.
Run 1-2
Reliable discard outlet that functions as a beater. Provides the stars for those high level synchros. Spellcaster type also allows the use of arcanite magician. Nasty plays have been done with this and fabled cerburrel.
Run 1-2
Fableds tend to special summon a lot of low level monsters, and warwolf can provide the extra stars for those synchros. Allows for access to T.G. Wonder Magician if you are out of mst's.
Glow-up Bulb
Dandylion
Spore
The plant engine triumvirate that everyone and their mother runs these days. Used along with One for One provides reliable access to formula synchron and shoothing star dragon. Also functions as discard fodder when fableds aren't in hand.
You knew this was coming. Tengu is used here for the same reasons it's used everywhere else: regenerating synchro material, meat shield, etc. Primarily used to synchro spam even more.
Run 3
An oldie. Mass discard power that also draws. Whats not to like? Also turns opponents' god hands into mush.
Run 1
Graveyard and discard manipulation all in one. Discard a krus or a cerburral, take back a grimro from the graveyard, profit.
Chainable discard that disrupts their field and draws. Other than the standard solemns and maybe trap stun, this is one of the few traps most fabled decks run.
The Extra Deck Notables
Properly used, this is a pot of greed with a body. Ragin is this deck's primary draw engine. Played correctly you will always draw 2 cards off of his effect. Level 5 body provides a base for more synchroing.
Run 2-3
High attack beater that gives back the resources used to make it when it dies. Running this is usually a preference thing, as the heavy use of caius and d-prisons in the meta makes Leviathan's effect somewhat less useful.
Run 0-1
Effect looks good until you realize that you have to discard a fiend type moster. "The Fableds" are all beasts. The only good use for this monster is its attack.
Run 0-1
OTK incarnate. This card gains insanely large amounts of attack points and makes otks fair easier. Revival effect also helps if they use book of moon to shift it to defense. Also makes gorz less threatening.
One of THE most interesting synchro monsters in the game. Respectable attack and level 4 allows it to be summoned by krus. Its negation effect is continuous , works when a card effect is resolving, and can negate counter traps. During a chain if for ANY reason your hand sizes are the same all of you opponents cards effects are negated.
For example, my opponent and I have 2 cards in hand. He activates dark hole from hand, and I chain phoenix wind wind blast and discard so i have 1 card in hand also. By the time dark hole resolves we both have 1 card in hand, so dark hole is negated. Similar examples can be made with dark bribe and solemn judgment. Unicore effectively wins games when both players are topdecking, since both you and your opponent has close if not identical hand sizes.
