They are not treated as traps, just like Overlaid monsters and not treated as monsters.

Overlayed cards are no longer on the field. Therefore the 2 Zomas are no longer on the field and therefore no longer in your S/T zone.

Overlay are definitely on the field. Otherwise, you can't control them:
Xyz Energy: Detach 1 Xyz Material you control to target 1 face-up monster your opponent controls; destroy that target.
The only difference is that they are not considered cards, so they don't have their effect on the field.

Yeah, Xyz materials are on the field, but they're not cards that face-up on the field.

xyzs are not considered on the field which is why you don't get effects like Sangan and Goblin Zombie when they are detached

You understand it wrong, what I meant is they're not face-up on field, or consider as cards on field. They're just Xyz materials that the player control.

In order for a player to control something, it is said to be on his/her side of the field.
In other words, Overlay are on the field. They just aren't cards.

Re: Question regarding traps like Zoma the spirit
Xyz Materials are not treated as being on the field, as seen in the October/November 2011 issue of Shonen Jump and later confirmed by Konami.[2] When an Xyz Material is detached, any "leave the field" effects it may have are not activated, so for example, "Sangan" does not have its search effect activated upon being detached, and "Reborn Tengu" does not Summon a copy of itself when it is detached.
As indicated above, they're simply parts of the Xyz monster which you control but are not themselves on the field.

Xyz Material is not considered on the Field, so it's nothing more than Material.
