How does Grand Mole beat Catastor?

Grand Mole can bounce a monster it battles at the start of the Damage step, but that's optional.

Catastor destroys any non-dark monster it battles at the start of the Damage step. That isn't optional. And both are at the start of the damage step.

I accept the ruling that Grand Mole beats Catastor, but I'll still question it. Do optional effects resolve before mandatory ones?

mandatory vs mandatory / optional vs optional =priority decides which one goes first on the chain link


mandatory vs optional = mandatory always go first

CL order is as follows:

Turn Players mandatory effects -> Non-turn players mandatory effects -> turn players optional -> non-turn players optional.

Therefore, turn player or not, Catastor becomes CL 1 since it is mandatory, then mole is CL2. It resolves backwards so Mole bounces, then Catastor tries to destroy. However Mole is no longer on the field to be destroyed by the effect, and therefore Catastor cannot check Moles attribute.

I'm sure you've met it bevore and you will meet in in several other situations. Read it, remember it, and you'll never have a problem with that again.

Yup like Pox and almost everyone on here has said, Chain resolves back wards, Mole bounces To hand aloong with catastor to the extra and catastor has no attribute or card to go by.
