i attack the ryko which he flips and targets thunderbird can i then use thunderbird's effect and remove it from play?

Thuderbird's effect cannot be actived during damage step. It cannot active when Ryko's eff active.

We still haven't know if Verz Thunderbird is allow to be activated during Damage Step or not.

That's a good point but for now i'll stick to the main phases luckily not long to wait hopefully

It is a quick effect, and it doesn't +- ATK/DEF nor negate anything.

We can assume this because of the official rulings about Quick Effect. Waiting for the rulings about DT cards take forever.
