Solved Ancient Gear Beast vs Ryko

If my Ancient Gear Beast attacks a facedown Ryko, Lightsworn Hunter its effect is negated correct? My opponent was telling me that it wasn't because flip is before destruction.

According to Wikia:
If the monster is flipped up and destroyed as a result of battle, the card is destroyed first, and then its effect is activated (on the field) and resolved in the Damage Step to prevent the card from targeting itself in the cases of effects like "Hane-Hane".

So was I correct in assuming that he was incorrect?

I´m actually seen it as if it were Ruler Ha-Des. As long as you destroy Ryko then yeah, Ryko´s effect gets negated.
