X marks the spot - X-Saber Guide and Profile
Introduction
- Spoiler:
- The X-Sabers are a series of EARTH-Attribute, mainly Warrior-Type and Beast-Warrior-Type monsters whose effects associate with swarming the field. While in the past they have been associated with hand control, and to a limited degree still are, the archetype is now more focused around Summoning many monsters in very short periods of time. XX-Sabers sub-Archetype was released to the TCG with the 2009 Starter Deck. The XX-Sabers are still considered X-Sabers though.
With the introduction of the Dark World archetype, X-Sabers no longer use their hand destruction tactics as much as they used too.
Members and Themed Support
Monsters:- Spoiler:
Most of you probably remember this guy from the Rescue Cat days where you tribute Rescue Cat, bring out this guy and Darksoul then either Synchro 6 or attack then force your opponent to discard then get a search for Darksoul. Well with Rescue Cat gone and Dark Worlds being introduced. You won't be using this guys effect as much as before.X-Saber Airbellum
Level 3/Earth/Beast/Tuner
1600 ATK/200 DEF
When this card inflicts Battle Damage to your opponent by a direct attack, discard 1 random card from your opponent's hand.
Run 1-2
Our themed draw monster. Unfortunately with only 400 ATK and just 100 DEF, Chances are this guy will get run over before you can use its effects.X-Saber Axel
Level 1/Earth/Beast-Warrior
400 ATK/100 DEF
While you control this face-up card, when a face-up "Saber" monster you control is destroyed by battle and sent to the Graveyard, draw 1 card.
Run 0
Obligatory vanilla monster.X-Saber Anu Piranha
Level 4/Earth/Warrior
1800 ATK/1100 DEF
A female X-Saber Warrior, known for her graceful attacks and calm decision making in battle. Her ambition is merciless, and strikes fear in the hearts of her enemies.
Run 0
it's like Jain but this guy loses attack when it's the one being attacked. Although it can protect itself by tributing a "Saber" when it's attacked which opens up some nice plays with Darksoul. It's just not worth running this card.X-Saber Galahad
Level 4/Earth/Warrior
1800 ATK/800 DEF
If this card attacks an opponent's monster, this card gains 300 ATK during the Damage Step only. If this card is attacked by an opponent's monster, this card loses 500 ATK during the Damage Step only. When this card is selected as an attack target, you can Tribute another "Saber" monster to negate the attack.
Run 0
Being a Level 1 tuner, this guy gives us a way to get out Formula Synchron with Ragigura or an Armory arm with Darksoul. The destroyed by battle bit is a pretty easy requirement and 500 life points is not that heavy. Can be an interesting tech choice.X-Saber Palomuro
Level 1/Earth/Reptile/Tuner
200 ATK/300 DEF
When another "Saber" monster you control is destroyed by battle and sent to the Graveyard, you can pay 500 Life Points to Special Summon this card from the Graveyard.
Run 0-1
Themed Spirit Reaper that doesn't self destruct and can be special summoned from the deck with Reinforce Truth. Synchros nicely into Hyunlei with Boggart Knight or any Level 5 Synchro with Darksoul.X-Saber Pashuul
Level 2/Earth/Warrior/Tuner
100 ATK/0 DEF
This card cannot be destroyed by battle. If this card is in face-up Defense Position, you take 1000 damage during each of your opponent's Standby Phases.
Run 2
This card has a pretty nasty lock with Faultroll where you can just keep reviving this card every turn so that you pretty much kill their draw. It's stats are a bit weak though so it limits on what cards you'll be able to bounce. Can be an interesting tech if you choose to run it.X-Saber Uruz
Level 4/Earth/Beast-Warrior
1600 ATK/1000 DEF
When this card destroys an opponent's monster by battle and sends it to the Graveyard, you can Tribute this card to return the destroyed card to the top of its owner's Deck.
Run 0-2
Allows one turn Faultroll summons. This card also Synchs nicely with Pashuul to form Hyunlei or with a level 3 tuner for either Souza or Urbellum. Opens up Level 4 Xyz plays with another copy of itself or Garsem.XX-Saber Boggart Knight
Level 4/Earth/Beast-Warrior
1900 ATK/1000 DEF
When this card is Normal Summoned, you can Special Summon 1 Level 4 or lower "X-Saber" monster from your hand. This card cannot be used as a Synchro Material Monster, except for the Synchro Summon of a "X-Saber" monster.
Run 2-3
OCG rulings says that you can only get just one search every turn with this card while the TCG rulings says you get to search once for each time it is sent to the Graveyard. Whichever ruling you go by, this card is too good to pass up. It can search for all X-Saber monsters including Faultroll.XX-Saber Darksoul
Level 3/Earth/Beast
100 ATK/100 DEF
During the End Phase, if this card was sent from your side of the field to your Graveyard this turn: You can add 1 "X-Saber" monster from your Deck to your hand.
Run 3
Our own Giant Rat. If you decide to run Axel then you can just keep suiciding this card so you can keep drawing.XX-Saber Emmersblade
Level 3/Earth/Insect
1300 ATK/800 DEF
When this card is destroyed by battle and sent to the Graveyard: You can Special Summon 1 Level 4 or lower "X-Saber" monster from your Deck.
Run 2-3
Cannot be special summoned by any other ways other than by its own card effect. Boggart Knight or Gottoms' Emergency Call easily fulfills the summoning conditions for this card. Once per turn revival is incredible as it allows you to easily swarm the field with Synchros. Also a key member on the X-Saber hand destruction loop.XX-Saber Faultroll
Level 6/Earth/Warrior
2400 ATK/1800 DEF
Cannot be Normal Summoned or Set. This card cannot be Special Summoned except while you control 2 or more face-up "X-Saber" monsters. Once per turn, you can Special Summon 1 level 4 or lower "X-Saber" monster from your Graveyard.
Run 2-3
Best tuner of the deck. It can protect your monsters once from attacks so you can bring this out with Emmersblade and use this cards effect to protect itself from attacks or summon this card if you have Stardust Dragon out to protect Stardust from an attack. Its second effect combos nicely with Book of Moon and Enemy Controller.XX-Saber Fulhelmknight
Level 3/Earth/Warrior/Tuner
1300 ATK/1000 DEF
When your opponent declares an attack, you can select the attacking monster, and negate the attack. You can only activate this effect once (while this card remains face-up on the field). If this card destroys a Defense Position monster your opponent controls by battle, you can select 1 Level 4 or lower "X-Saber" monster from your Graveyard and Special Summon it.
Run 3
Our very own Cyber Dragon, it even has the same attack points. The special summoning conditions are harder compared to Cyber Dragon but it can be run as a tech choice. Personally, I run one so that I can easily use Gottoms' Emergency Call without using up my normal summon.XX-Saber Gardestrike
Level 5/Earth/Beast-Warrior
2100 ATK/1400 DEF
If you have 2 or more "X-Saber" monsters in your Graveyard and you control no monsters, you can Special Summon this card from your hand.
Run 0-1
His first effect is practically a weaker version of Darksoul but with all the destruction going around these days, this card remains as a valid tech choice. This guy comes out with 1600 attack thanks to his own effect and maxes out at 2400 attack assuming you have a full field of X-Saber monsters.XX-Saber Garsem
Level 4/Earth/Beast
1400 ATK/400 DEF
When this card on the field is destroyed and sent to the Graveyard by a card effect, add 1 "X-Saber" monster from your Deck to your hand. This card gains 200 ATK for each face-up "X-Saber" monster you control.
Run 0-2
He lets you recycle your Faultroll and any X-Saber Synchro monster that you have in your graveyard or you can recycle a Boggart Knight so that you can use his effect again. Ideally, you would want to special summon this guy instead of normal summoning him because of his pretty low stats. Also one of the key members of the X-Saber Hand destruction loop.XX-Saber Ragigura
Level 1/Earth/Beast-Warrior
200 ATK/1000 DEF
When this card is Normal Summoned or Special Summoned, you can add 1 "X-Saber" monster from your Graveyard to your hand.
Run 0-1
First effect allows you to run over annoying cards like Spirit Reaper and Marshmallon and allows you to attack without worrying about Honest, while the second effect let's you attack without worrying about Mirror Force. Currently an OCG only card.X-Saber Sousa
Level 7/Earth/Warrior/Synchro
2500 ATK/1600 DEF
1 Tuner + 1 or more non-Tuner "X-Saber" monsters
You can Tribute 1 "X-Saber" monster; this card gains 1 of these effects until the End Phase: ● If this card battles a monster: Destroy that monster immediately with this card's effect (without damage calculation). ● This card cannot be destroyed by the effects of Trap Cards.
Run 1
This card is actually quite good in this format since people are setting less nowadays. I find that this card combos nicely with Trap Dustshoot, after attacking with this card and using his effect, set a Trap Dustshoot then use it on your opponents turn.X-Saber Urbellum
Level 7/Earth/Warrior/Synchro
2200 ATK/1300 ATK
1 Tuner + 1 or more non-Tuner monsters
When this card inflicts Battle Damage to your opponent while they have 4 or more cards in their hand, place 1 random card from their hand on top of their Deck.
Run 0-1
Synchro this card then summon a Pashuul or a Fulhelmknight with his effect then Synchro into a level 7 or 8.X-Saber Wayne
Level 5/Earth/Warrior/Synchro
2100 ATK/400 DEF
1 Tuner + 1 or more non-Tuner monsters
When this card is Synchro Summoned, you can Special Summon 1 Level 4 or lower Warrior-Type monster from your hand.
Run 0-1
Our very own Harpie's Feather Duster. Even with all the backrow hate in the current format, I still find her still quite useful as you can use her effect instead of using up your MST or Heavy Storm and use those for later.XX-Saber Hyunlei
Level 6/Earth/Warrior/Synchro
2300 ATK/1300 DEF
1 Tuner + 1 or more non-Tuner "X-Saber" monsters.
When this card is Synchro Summoned, you can select and destroy up to 3 Spell or Trap Cards on the field.
Run 2
The boss monster of the deck and the most important card in the hand destruction loop. Can be summoned with more than one tuner or even nothing but tuners. 3100 attack runs over almost everything.XX-Saber Gottoms
Level 9/Earth/Beast-Warrior/Synchro
3100 ATK/2600 DEF
1 Tuner + 1 or more EARTH monsters
You can Tribute 1 "X-Saber" monster to discard 1 random card from your opponent's hand.
Run 1-2
Our first Xyz monster. To be perfectly blunt, this card is terrible for X-Sabers and is probably more suited with other Warrior decks. It would probably be better if it included Beast Type monsters in its range of targets.M. X-Saber Invoker
Rank 3/Earth/Warrior/Xyz
1900 ATK/500 DEF
2 Level 3 monsters
Once per turn: You can detach 1 Xyz Material from this card; Special Summon 1 Level 4 EARTH Warrior or Beast-Warrior-Type monster (from your Deck) in face-up Defense Position to your side of the field. Destroy that monster during the End Phase.
Run 0
- Spoiler:
Give your X-Sabers a small boost to their attacks. Not really worth the deck space as Burden of the Mighty does the job betterSaber Vault
Field Spell
Each face-up "X-Saber" monster on the field gains 100 ATK x its Level, and loses 100 DEF x its Level.
Run 0
Non targeting destruction. If you have more face-up attack position X-Sabers than your opponent has cards, then you will need to destroy one or more of your own cards.Saber Slash
Normal Spell
Destroy a number of face-up cards on the field equal to the number of face-up Attack Position "X-Saber" monsters you control.
Run 0-2
More destruction but this time in the form of an Equip Card. It really seems nice on paper but chances are you won't be getting to use this much as there are better options when it comes to general destruction.Sword of Sparkles
Equip Spell
Equip only to an "X-Saber" monster. If it destroys an opponent's monster by battle, you can destroy 1 card your opponent controls. You can Tribute 1 monster you control to return this card from your Graveyard to the top of your Deck.
Run 0
- Spoiler:
Our very own Horn of the Phantom Beast. Requires you to only have one face-up X-Saber monster. The 800 attack boost is nice and the draw one is nice as well. The "only one face-up X-Saber monster" hurts its playability a lot but still playable on a non competitive level. At One With the Sword
Normal Trap
Activate while the only monster you control is 1 face-up "X-Saber" monster. Equip this card to that monster. It gains 800 ATK. If it destroys your opponent's monster by battle, draw 1 card.
Run 0-2
Our best friend and worst enemy. Allows you to revive X-Saber Synchro monsters from the graveyard and gives you another way to fulfill the summoning conditions of Faultroll. It also counters X-Sabers as well since it just needs an X-Saber on the field (either yours or your opponents X-Saber) to be activated and it revives from either player's graveyard.Gottoms' Emergency Call
Normal Trap
Activate only if there is a face-up "X-Saber" monster(s) on the field. Select 2 "X-Saber" monsters in either player's Graveyard(s). Special Summon those monsters to your side of the field.
Run 2-3
Our own Horn of Heaven. Although Solemn Warning is better as it allows you to negate special summons via card effects. This card is still nice to have in your main deck as additional summon negationSaber Hole
Counter Trap
Activate only while you control a face-up "X-Saber" monster. Negate the Summon of a monster and destroy it.
Run 0-2
Techs and Non Themed Support
Monsters:- Spoiler:
Helps in bringing out Darksoul or Airbellum to the field. Synchs into Black Rose Dragon with either Airbellum or FulhelmknightSuper-Nimble Mega Hamster
Level 4/Earth/Beast
1100 ATK/1800 DEF
FLIP: You can Special Summon 1 Level 3 or lower Beast-Type monster from your Deck in face-down Defense Position.
Run 0-2Cyber Dragon
Level 5/Light/Machine
2100 ATK/1600 DEF
If your opponent controls a monster and you control no monsters, you can Special Summon this card (from your hand).
Some prefer to main these cards while other prefer to side it. Either way you should really run it.Chimeratech Fortress Dragon
Level 8/Dark/Machine/Fusion
0 ATK/0 DEF
"Cyber Dragon" + 1 or more Machine-Type monsters.
This monster cannot be used as a Fusion Material Monster. You can only Special Summon this card from your Extra Deck by sending the above cards from either side of the field to the Graveyard. (You do not use "Polymerization".) The original ATK of this card is equal to 1000 x the number of Fusion Material Monsters used to Special Summon it.
Run 1-2 for Cyber Dragon, Run 1 for Chimeratech Fortress Dragon
One of the best cards in this meta. Can stop so many plays it's not even funny.Effect Veiler
Level 1/Light/Spellcaster/Tuner
0 ATK/0 DEF
During your opponent's Main Phase, you can send this card from your hand to the Graveyard to select 1 face-up Effect Monster your opponent controls. Negate the effect(s) of that monster until the End Phase.
Run 2Ryko, Lightsworn Hunter
Level 2/Light/Beast
200 ATK/100 DEF
FLIP: You can select 1 card on the field, and destroy it. Send the top 3 cards of your Deck to the Graveyard.Jain, Lightsworn Paladin
Level 4/Light/Warrior
1800 ATK/1200 DEF
If this card attacks an opponent's monster, it gains 300 ATK during the Damage Step only. During each of your End Phases: Send the top 2 cards of your Deck to the Graveyard. You must control this face-up card to activate and to resolve this effect.
Lightsworn variant of X-Sabers.Lyla, Lightsworn Sorceress
Level 4/Light/Spellcaster
1700 ATK/200 DEF
You can change this card from face-up Attack Position to face-up Defense Position and destroy 1 Spell or Trap Card your opponent controls. If you activate this effect, this card's battle position cannot be changed until the end of your next turn, except with a card effect. During each of your End Phases, send the top 3 cards of your Deck to the Graveyard.
Run 0-2 for regular X-Sabers, Run 2 of each for Lightsworn Variants.
OTK Stopper. What more can I say?Gorz the Emissary of Darkness
Level 7/Dark/Fiend
2700 ATK/2500 ATK
When you take damage from a card your opponent controls while you control no cards, you can Special Summon this card from your hand. Then activate the appropriate effect, based on the type of damage:
● Battle Damage: Special Summon 1 "Emissary of Darkness Token" (Fairy-Type/LIGHT/Level 7/ATK ?/DEF ?). Its ATK and DEF are each equal to the amount of battle damage you took.
● Effect Damage: Inflict damage to your opponent equal to the damage you took.
Run 1
More of a "for fun" card than anything else. Turns the X-Saber hand destruction combo into an OTK by replacing XX-Saber Gottoms with this card.Cannon Soldier
Level 4/Dark/Machine
1400 ATK/1300 DEF
You can Tribute 1 monster to inflict 500 damage to your opponent.
Run 0, Run 2-3 on Builds dedicated on the OTK
- Spoiler:
- Upstart Goblin
Normal Spell
Draw 1 card from your Deck. Increase your opponent's Life Points by 1000 Life Points.
Some prefer to run Upstart Goblin because it doesn't stop them from Special summoning while others prefer to run Pot of Duality because it's more consistent.Pot of Duality
Normal Spell
Reveal the top 3 cards of your Deck, add 1 of them to your hand, then shuffle the rest back into your Deck. You can only activate 1 "Pot of Duality" per turn. You cannot Special Summon a monster(s) during the turn you activate this card.
Run 0 or Run 3 for Upstart Goblin, Run 2-3 for Pot of Duality
It's first effect works well with Fulhelmknight while the second effect opens up various Xyz or Synchro plays. Bonus search if you tribute Darksoul for the second effect.Enemy Controller
Quick-Play Spell
Select and activate 1 of these effects:
●Change the Battle Position of 1 face-up monster your opponent controls.
●Tribute 1 monster. Select 1 face-up monster your opponent controls. Take control of it until the End Phase.
Run 0-2
Staple. Counters enemy tuners and Fulhelmknight shenanigans.Book of Moon
Quick-Play Spell
Select 1 face-up monster on the field and flip it into face-down Defense Position.
Run 1
Take one monster and either Synchro or Xyz with it. I want to say that it's a staple but Compulsory Evacuation Device and Book of Moon can mess with your plans badly. Also you might not have the appropriate level needed for a Synchro or Xyz monster if you take a face down card.Mind Control
Normal Spell
Take control of 1 monster your opponent controls until the End Phase. It cannot declare an attack or be Tributed.
Run 0-1
Another way to recycle Faultroll and Warrior type Synchros and Xyz. Can also be used to grab a Pashuul or Fulhelmknight from the grave before summoning Boggart Knight. The Warrior Returning Alive
Normal Spell
Target 1 Warrior-Type monster in your Graveyard; add that target to your hand.
Run 0-1
- Spoiler:
Helps bring out Pashuul, can be a dead draw if all copies of Pashuul are no longer in the deck. Use this on your opponents turn either during the battle phase, chain it to MST or Heavy Storm or during the end phase.Reinforce Truth
Normal Trap
Special Summon 1 Level 2 or lower Warrior-Type monster from your Deck. You cannot conduct your Battle Phase the turn you activate this card.
Run 0-1
Easily one of the best traps in the current meta. Bounce back annoying monsters like TKRO or Stardust.Compulsory Evacuation Device
Normal Trap
Return 1 monster on the field to its owner's hand.
Run 0-2Starlight Road
Normal Trap
Activate only when an effect is activated that would destroy 2 or more cards you control. Negate the effect and destroy that card. Then, you can Special Summon 1 "Stardust Dragon" from your Extra Deck.
X-Sabers have a tendency to fill the field with monsters in just a single turn so protection against cards like Dark Hole and Torrential Tribute is always welcome. Personally I prefer Huge Revolution Reversal over Starlight Road but that's just me.Huge Revolution Reversal
Counter Trap
If an effect of a Spell, Trap or Effect Monster that would destroy 2 or more cards on the field is activated: Negate that activation, and banish it.
Run 0-2

Normally I'm a big fan of Scapegoat but not for X-Sabers.Maxwell_Edison wrote:Nice thread! I would suggest adding scapegoat though.
Cause scapegoat is broken.
X-Sabers are all EARTH attribute so you don't need to use the tokens for the Synchro of Naturia Beast or Barkion.
X-Sabers also spam the field with monsters pretty fast so you'll rarely have more than 2 monster zones available. Sure the opponent might blow your field up but instead of putting in a Scapegoat for those situations Starlight Road or Huge Revolution Reversal are better options.
You can tribute it for Enemy Controller but aside from that you won't really use it all that much.
Also, updated main post with new cards for tech choices.
